This past Friday and Saturday Mari and I had the privilege of covering a fund raising event for Special Olympics of North Carolina. The event was Over the Edge – Charlotte. Participants that raised a donation $1000 for Special Olympics of North Carolina rappelled 35 stories down the side of The VUE Charlotte, descending from the 43rd floor and landing on the 8th floor.
Friday was media day and several local media personalities, including Sir Purr, the Panther’s mascot, Drex of Kiss 95.1, Brandon Chase of CBS Radio, Jon Wilson of Wilson’s World on Fox News Rising, Sarah Crosland of Charlotte Magazine, and a few others from local media companies. Saturday was the big event with nearly 70 rappelers scheduled. They were from all walks of life, young and old, and most had never done anything like this before. But in the end they all had two things in common; they all raised over $1000 for a great cause, and they all made it to the ground safely with the help of the Over the Edge staff and volunteers.
It was close to Halloween so many of the participants wore costumes. Spiderman and Spiderwoman seemed to be the favorite choice for obvious reasons. In addition, we had a cow, a kangaroo, a leopard, and a luchador (Mexican wrestler). Several local firefighters were on hand to take the drop. There were also participants from Hooters, Charlotte Speed Demons, and Charlotte Roller Girls. Even the Director of Sales and Marketing from The VUE got in on the action. The weather was a bit windy and chilly, especially on top of the building, but it was a lot of fun and I’m glad we were part of the activity.
