Twig the Fairy Comes to Visit

Hide the scissors and  keep an eye on your left sock, Twig the Fairy might just take them! The studio may never be the same. This week, Heather Hawkins brought Twig the Fairy and Zinnia the Fairy to the studio for a photoshoot.

Never having worked with winged fairies, I had no idea what I was in for or what to bring, how to prepare, etc. It turns out that there was no preparation needed. Twig and Zinnia showed up with their own environment and basically made themselves at home. There were:

  • wings
  • 2 large toadstools
  • 3 or 4 small toadstools

But wait, there’s more! (inside joke)

  • a giant mushroom
  • bubbles and bubble blowing ‘stuff’
  • 20 to 30 Knott friends
  • a little dirt
  • butterflies
  • butterfly nets
  • fairy catchers
  • and, of course, GLITTER, some of which is still at the studio!

I guess I was out-prepared… all I brought was a camera.

Scissors.

When I was a kid, my mother always told me not to run with scissors. I guess it must have been common in the day for children to pick up scissors and just run wildly with them in hand bringing fear to all those around them, I just don’t know. It’s an expression that has stuck with me my entire life, and although I have no children, I still find it necessary to pass the warning to anyone that asks for scissors. Zinnia was first. It was a harmless request. “Do you have any scissors?” Of course I did and produced them for her to use with, of course, the obligatory “Don’t run with them” warning. Now Zinnia heeded my words and behaved, but I think I was set up. A while later, Twig had to get in on it, perhaps just because she saw Zinnia with scissors and had to have some herself, could be a fairy thing, I don’t know. I don’t think the scissors had even left my hand for hers and she was off in a puff of glitter, running wildly through the studio. All I could do is watch in horror. My mother would be so ashamed.

After Twig finally stopped running about with the scissors we went about the business of the shoot. First I thought I was shooting a high fashion model.., the lack of emotion, the vacant stares, the provocative poses, not at all what I expected from a mythical creature with magical powers. Maybe from a troll or a gnome, but not a fairy. So I had to say it… “Is that all you brought, fairy?” Whoops!

The next several minutes I got fairy attitude. Stares, the evil looks, and Twig played a lovely death march to me on her flute. When was Heather going to have Zinnia finished already?

After a few minutes, Twig settled down and we got back the the shoot. She had made her point and I behaved for the rest of the day. I guess it was the death march that got to me.

The rest of the day was spent photographing tricycle races, Knotts, butterfly catching, bubble blowing, and just all-round fairy craziness. I have to admit that Twig’s persona is very infectious and I couldn’t help but become a fan. (despite the death march)

Please enjoy some of my favorite images from the day!

Pouty Twig – I like to think it was because she was sad that the shoot was over and she had to leave….
